Over three years (1955-57), the Powell's built more than 1,000 pickups and 150 station wagons (like the seller's). As parts started to get scarce, they shut down operations and moved on to other things. This Sport Wagon is one of 130 of both body styles thought to still be around. It was previously restored and seems to be in good condition today.

The Powell Sport Wagon was born out of the Powell Manufacturing Company, a company that initially manufactured radios and later transitioned into scooter production and lightweight motorcycles. In the early 1950s, Powell Manufacturing shifted its focus to producing pickups and station wagons. The Sport Wagon was one of their notable creations.

Almost a thousand were sold over its three years (1955-1957). Prices started at just $1095, quite a bit less than a new car of the times. They were cheap to build, and the chassis could be bought in junkyards for $45 or so. Powell was supposedly profitable, but the business was wound down in 1957.

The only 1955 options offered were turn signals and hubcaps. 1956 options on the "Deluxe" pickup model included diamond-plate rear bumper and tailgate and two-tone upholstered seats. Powell trucks and wagons will also be remembered for the fishing pole storage tube that slid out of the rear of the vehicle from between the inner and outer fender.

While most vehicles end their lives in a junkyard, every one of the thousand or so Powell Sport Wagons built from 1955 to 1957 started out there. Beneath each modern looking steel and fiberglass truck body are the refurbished bones and innards of a 15-year old Plymouth plucked from the scrapheap.

Between 1955 and 1957, approximately 1,000 pickups were produced, but fewer than 100 Sport Wagons were built. The unique pull-out fishing rod holders and bait box were among the special Sport Wagon features. Production ended in 1957 due to a shortage of 1941 Plymouth donor cars.

Scotty Gilbertson UPDATE - We showed this rare Powell Sport Wagon last December and the seller is listing it again, here on craigslist, with a slightly lower asking price of $26,000 or best offer. It's a very rare and interesting vehicle but we wonder if any buyers will be enticed with just a $1,000 drop in the asking price?

Even though the Sport Wagon was meant to be simple and cheap, it also had a few innovations like these novel pull-out tubular drawers which allowed the owner to carry long items such as fishing poles. This one appears to have dividers to haul tools or parts. Options were few, but with the factory camper shell this could be the ultimate fishing rig!

Powell 1955. Powell factory. The Powell Sport Wagon is built in Compton, California. The chassis and engines come from used prewar Plymouths and are rebuilt by the Powell brothers. Powell's brochure refer to this pickup as "one of the most beautiful on the market." The lists the price as $998.87 at the factory, with a standard new car guarantee.
